Большинство «новых» стран – членов Европейского союза к 2014 г., в отличие от таких «старых» государств – членов ЕС, как Португалия, Италия, Греция, Испания, показали в 2009–2013 гг. способность к успешному преодолению мирового экономического кризиса и его последствий. Соответственно, это повлияло на сокращение числа эмигрантов, уезжавших из «новых» государств-членов в «старые» страны Евросоюза.

Дальнейшее развитие динамики и возможное изменение основных направлений миграции из «новых» в «старые» государства – члены ЕС будет в определяющей степени зависеть от скорости социально-экономического развития этих двух групп стран и стирания различий между ними.
