Аннотация. В статье показано, как с течением времени менялась политическая позиция Герцена в зависимости от обстоятельств и опыта его идейных исканий. Анализируются влияние на Герцена якобинской политической традиции, его реакция на европейские революции 1848–1849 гг. и отношение к русскому революционному движению. Особое внимание уделяется прежде неизвестным связям Герцена с французскими демократами.
