Гирудотерапия является методом лечения, который применяется в Анатолии с древних времен. Применение медицинских пиявок было официально принято «Regulation on Traditional Complementary Medicine» Министерством здравоохранения Турции 27 сентября 2014 года. В соответствии с регламентом, подробная информация о применении гирудотерапии, была определена сертификационной программой Health Education Certificate Training Programs от 15.10.2015 г.

Показаниями к гирудотерапии, законодательно утверждёнными, являются боль, заболевания опорно-двигательного аппарата, дегенеративные заболевания суставов (остеоартриты), противоболевая терапия при боковом эпикондилите, шум или боль в ушах, лечение некоторых офтальмологических и стоматологических расстройств, сердечно-сосудистые заболевания и применение пиявок для поддержки реплантации и реваскуляризации.
